The Swedish Flower is a great foraging chicken for your homestead. It is known as land race of chicken, there is no formal standard for the breeding program, they were given a chance to naturally select. This has allowed for many varieties of color giving them their flowery appearance. This random selection has made for an interesting and a hardy poultry breed. Thought to have been in existence since the time of the Romans in Sweden. This possibly allowed them the time to evolve into the blommehöna coloring you see now, merely as a form of survival. It was relatively unknown until the 1970’s and 1980’s when a handful of Swedish Flowers were found in a rural Swedish village. Very few Swedes were aware of the existence of this rare breed.
The Swedish Flower hen lays cream colored eggs that vary from large to jumbo. If you are interested in raising and preserving breeds of poultry, this is a great place to start since there is no formal standard for breeding and hatching the chicks always brings excitement in the colors you will see. The hens are enjoyable and the males are confident protectors. Add one to your garden!
