Bielefelder is a German breed of chicken made famous by Gerd Roth in 1980's Germany. This breed comes in two colors, crele and silver. Silver is the rarest as it was considered a cull early on in the breeding program as Roth bred for his ultimate crele Uber chicken. We keep both varieties. Our birds are random bred to keep all of the characteristics of these amazing breeds going. It is an amazingly diverse gene pool. We have Canadian, American, as well as European genetics.
Much work was put into creating the silver version. A farming family known for its breeding programs in British Columbia have worked with preserving the original germplasm as well as reintroducing diversity to the breed through their collections of Belgian Malines, Amrocks, and standard pure German New Hampshire’s. We are excited to make available a new genetic pool that was previously unavailable in the USA. We have found both colors to be wonderful producers of large brown and speckled eggs. Their great temperament makes them a homesteader's dream.
For now, the silver version lends itself better to the heritage meat class with the bonus of lots of eggs. There is much in the works with the crele version and we have imported some of the fuller bodied versions to our farm. While we do our best to remove any birds that you may find less than suitable for your breeding program, in the end it comes down to selecting the characteristics that you desire. Everyone has a different idea what this bird should be for their farm. We hope to give you the best selection of genetics to advance your current flock.
