We added 9 KuneKune pigs (pronounced “cooney cooney”) to the farm just over a year ago. We have been loving every minute of it! I have to say, it was for my own selfish purposes and health. I'm sure you are thinking, why not add bacon, but that's not why we did it. These pigs are wonderful grazers with minimal impact to our forest and land. No more allergies from mowing and when in proper rotation, no more weed eating the fence lines. They are our almost carbon neutral, non-petrol fueled landscapers! With the added bonus of being delicious too. We will be offering piglets later this year and they are a delight to have on any small farm other than the occasional escapee. But when they do escape, a few apples or watermelon will have them running right back home.
Our KuneKune pigs are unvaccinated and are raised with a great life on pasture year-round.
If you haven't tried KuneKune pork, you should! It's much better than anything you can find at the local supermarket. Because the length of commitment required, there are few farms offering KuneKune pork. Most people opt for a commercial pink pig or a combination of genetics such as the Idaho Pasture Pig due to a faster finishing time. Our pork is processed at a USDA facility and we are able to ship anywhere within the US.
George is our indoor baby Kunekune piglet. He is sweet and fun. His mom is a first-time mom and didn't seem to know how or want to take care of him. We saw him shivering in the muddy puddle with his mom nowhere in sight. So, we brought him to the house, and we have been taking care of him since then.
With the help of her mom and dad, our little farmer has written a book about how we rescued George in the back field. The book is entitled "Life of George". Below is the entire book, hope you enjoy reading it!
